The studio announced Monday that it’s teaming with Legendary Entertainment to create a reboot of the classic sci-fi shooter series for both the PC and consoles.
The reboot will be set in a new world with a new cast of characters and will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov, who directed The Matrix Reloaded.
The announcement comes on the heels of Warner Bros.’ announcement that it will release The Flash, a reboot that has already grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
Legendary is bringing The Flash to theaters next summer.
“The original Doom and The Doom 2 were groundbreaking franchises, with their epic gameplay and brilliant storytelling,” said Mark Kern, president of Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment.
“With the addition of Legendary and Warner Bros., we are able to deliver a sequel that is both as powerful as its predecessor but at the same time a whole new experience.”
The first installment of the reboot was released in 2000 for the original PlayStation.
It brought a new game engine, a new playable cast of heroes and a new story mode that brought a more open world.
The sequel was a huge success with more than 3 million players playing it on PC.
Legendary and the Warner Bros.-backed production company The R-Corp team have said the reboot will bring a new level of gameplay and story.
“It is an ambitious project, and we know that many fans are excited to finally get their hands on the next chapter of this iconic franchise,” said Kern.
“Doom 2’s story is the most satisfying and rewarding in the franchise’s history, and now fans can finally experience that with a brand-new story and characters.”
Legendary is the company behind such games as World of Warcraft and the upcoming Diablo.
